I had a “random” conversation with a man on the side of the road the other day. Something led me to open a convo with him. Come to find out that indeed he was at a cross-roads (aren’t we all, always?) of choosing a path where he would be wholly devoted to God in a traditional sense (ie: become a pastor). The other option would be to continue his film career. We spoke for awhile around the topic of choice and his slight frustration bubbled to the surface. The dialogue went something like this (paraphrased)
Man: “I just want to get a clear SIGN that God wants me to do this”
V: There really is NO separation between you and your God. It is as simple as actually allowing a conversation. How often do you stop to listen to what is coming back in return? Prayer is not a one-way communication.
Man: Then how can I know that what I am choosing is right?
V: What if you ask YOU? The Divine in YOU? Not as an external source or like it is going to come down and hit you like a bolt of lightning?
He seemed to be quite taken by this.
V: Take a pen. Sit down. Ask a question/write one: and allow yourself to receive the answer! It works for me! It can work for you!
I admit I had just finished devouring Conversations With God - so it seemed rather comfortable to suggest that it be a two way “thing” and that it provides a high success rate if approached in such a way.
Guess what - it is never that you aren’t heard. It is simply that there are a few ideas in the way of receiving the reply. Like Rumi said above. Find those, and you are good to go!
